Applicants must have a Grade 12 high school diploma (by Alberta standards) or equivalent. If an applicant received education outside of Canada, an International Qualifications Assessment Certificate is required.
Good ethical character is fundamental. Applicants cannot have been involved in any criminal activity (detected or undetected) within the three-year period before the date of application to the EPS. If a criminal record exists, the applicant must obtain a pardon before the application will be considered. An application will not be accepted if there is an outstanding criminal prosecution against the applicant.
Excellent health is a requirement. Applicants should take the medical requirements self- assessment to see if they qualify in this area.
Excellent physical condition is essential. Do not underestimate this requirement. Be prepared to pass the physical readiness evaluation immediately. Please note that the physical fitness standards are minimum standards only — the selection process is very competitive.
Applicants must meet the required vision standards. Applicants must submit a Vision Report (located in the application package) signed by a qualified ophthalmologist or optometrist.
Applicants must meet the required hearing standards. Applicants must submit a Hearing Report (located in the application package) signed by a Certified/Registered Audiologist or Otolaryngologist ( Their credentials must reflect: Doctor of Audiology, Audiologist; Clinical Audiologist; Dr./MD of Otolaryngotomy). Any forms signed by a nurse or a technician will not be accepted.
Before an offer of employment is made, successful applicants must possess:
- be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of application;
- Canadian citizenship or legal permanent residence (certificate of citizenship and/or birth certificate or permanent resident documentation);
- a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (graduated driver’s licence is not acceptable);
- a good driving record (maximum of five demerits). In addition it is recommended that you are comfortable operating a mid-size vehicle in busy urban driving conditions;
- good writing skills (written communication testing will be included in the selection protocol and may include an essay);
- a certificate in standard first aid (must be a minimum 16-hour course, approved through Provincial Occupational Health and Safety. Certificate must be issued within one year prior to the date of application. Re-qualification may be necessary for some components after one year); and
- a current “Level C” certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (must have standards equivalent to those of the Canadian/American Heart and Stroke Foundation. Verify with the training agency that a CPR certification is included in the first aid certification).
The EPS requires all new employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 subject to any approved request for accommodation on the basis of a protected ground under the Alberta Human Rights Act. Candidates who are successful in being offered a position as a Recruit Constable will be required to provided proof of being fully vaccinated prior to their start date (or if they believe they require human rights accommodation, they will have the opportunity to make a request for such accommodation at that time).
Applicants are advised that any costs associated with the application process are borne by the applicant and are not reimbursed by the Edmonton Police Service, for example; vision test, hearing test, obtaining a Driver’s Abstract, High School Transcript, First Aid and CPR certification, vision or hearing surgery, or physician’s fee for medical clearance to run the APREP. The cost of any of the above may vary from one provider to another and may vary between provinces; applicants should contact providers directly to enquire about costs. There is no application submission fee, exam fees or APREP fee.
