Inside RTC #122 - Intro to drug investigations

January 05, 2012

I found the drug investigations classroom session fascinating. It was the first of four drug investigations classes, so it was an introductory session. Two officers from the Edmonton Drug and Gang Enforcement (EDGE) Unit taught the class.

We reviewed legislation, relevant charge sections in the Canadian Criminal Code under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), controlled substances and which ones are the most prevalent.

We also discussed the differences between trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

I can’t say much more about what we learned, but it was really interesting and really opened my eyes. I imagine the next sessions will continue to captivate the recruits.

Holiday time
I attended this class the week before Christmas. The recruits only get Christmas weekend and Boxing Day off for the holiday season. I know a lot of workplaces don’t get holidays. And police (along with many other professions) are certainly required to cover 24/7 throughout the entire season.

I just think it’s different when the recruits don’t get any other time off throughout their training.

Other than weekends, the recruits only get stat holidays off. For this class, that includes Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Boxing Day, and Family Day. It is a hectic schedule since they have a lot more studying and practice than just the 40 hours a week they are in class.

Stay tuned for next week's post when the recruits get exposed to OC spray.
