I went to training last week expecting a collisions investigation class. Like the nature of policing, training is constantly adjusted to accommodate issues that arise.
The instructor was called out to investigate a serious collision, so the recruit’s schedule was shifted around. Instead of a classroom session I was able to watch their practical control tactics testing.
There were 19 skills the recruits had to perform to a certain standard. They were tested by two training officers in groups of two. The officers I watched knew all their skills and performed them well.
While everyone else was being tested, I had the opportunity to chat with a few recruits about their training. A couple of interesting things I learned: they’re enjoying it all and they really like the practical aspects of training and are excited to get out on the street. One recruit said although some days are long and tough, there is no place he’d rather be than recruit training.
If you have any questions at all, feel free to email me at recruitblog@edmontonpolice.ca. I’ll answer the best I can.
