Alberta Communication Test (ACT)
Applicants will write the Alberta Communication Test (ACT) which takes approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes to complete (including instructions and break). It is designed to assess the applicant's ability to communicate in writing. Using a multiple-choice format, the test covers three areas:
- Reading vocabulary
- Spelling
- English grammar
Applicants can write this exam as many times necessary to pass. Minimum wait periods before writing again after a fail are:
- 1st test write fail – applicant must wait one month before rewriting;
- 2nd test write fail – applicant must wait six months before rewriting;
- 3rd test write fail – applicant must wait 12 months (the wait period will continue to double accordingly thereafter).

Upon completing this multiple choice exam, applicants must write a 500 word essay in a one hour time period.
Alberta Police Cognitive Ability Test (APCAT)
Thr next test applicants must take is the Alberta Police Cognitive Ability Test (APCAT). This is a job-related written examination of approximately three hours in duration. The test consists of 120 multiple choice questions.
Applicants can only take this exam three times before receiving a permanent deferral. Minimum wait periods after a fail are:-
- 1st test write fail - applicant must wait one month before rewriting;
- 2nd test write fail - applicant must wait three months before rewriting;
- 3rd test write fail - no further attempts permitted.
If the applicant does not pass this exam in three attempts, they will not be allowed to participate in the selection process for any Municipal Police Agency in Alberta. (This does not include the RCMP.)
