School Resource Officers
The School Resource Officer Program is community policing in its purest form and is an excellent opportunity to develop strong management and leadership skills while building rapport with the next generation. Members become part of the school community, answer questions from students and staff, listen to concerns, identify problems and assist in finding solutions.
As a visible law enforcement presence in the school, a School Resource Officer enforces the law, conducts investigations as the need arises, and prevents crime. They make a real difference in communities by providing a learning environment through counselling, structured classroom lectures, and distribution of educational resource materials. Working co-operatively with school administrators, staff, students, parents and the community, School Resource Officers identify and address school concerns or problems.
EPS Constables can apply and compete for positions as an SRO. Opportunities arise with Senior High Schools throughout the city, and members are interviewed by the Sergeant in charge of the SRO program as well as representatives from the Edmonton Public School Board and Edmonton Catholic School District. Members who have demonstrated skills in working with youth, such as coaching sports teams, or teaching DARE may have a competitive edge when applying for this unit.
